Various sources are reporting on Oracle putting in an offer to buy BEA for a whopping 6.7 billion dollar.
I did some projects using WebLogic, WebLogic portal and WebLogic workshop but was never really a fan of BEA. I do however like healthy appserver competition!
Somehow I feel that if Oracle actually acquires BEA, WebLogic will die a slow and silent death…. in contrary to what Oracle claims.
Still it seems the Race isn’t over; SAP is in it as well… which isn’t much of a different story…
Whatever the outcome is: I for one will just remove WebLogic (I was already thinking of doing that) from my resumé. WebLogic will be passé really soon.
– update –
The 6.7 billion dollar offer was turned down. Now let’s just wait to see if anyone puts in another offer!
It does not really make sense for a company to spend almost 7 billion dollars on a company to shut down its main product. What’s the purpose of such an action?
People are speculating about the actual why. When JBoss went up for sale Oracle placed a bid as well…. so the might be interested in expanding their portfolio.
However… as I mentioned elsewhere: Oracles’ portfolio isn’t really lacking a specific type of product. Oracle is however getting heavy competition from SAP and HP… they’re probably trying to get ahead of them by trying to incorporate BEA.
